Facial Broken Veins and Rosacea

Facial broken veins and Rosacea is two different skin conditions but they could appear at the same time on the face.

Facial broken veins, also known as facial telangiectasia or spider veins on the face, are small, visible blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin. They often appear as thin, red or blue lines or web-like patterns and are most commonly found on the cheeks, nose, and chin. These veins are called “broken” because they are dilated or enlarged, making them more noticeable.

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, resulting in redness and visible blood vessels. Rosacea and redness can affect almost everyone, it is most common in middle-aged white women. Although there is no cure for rosacea, the treatments can control and reduce the signs and symptoms.

At EC Aesthetic Clinic London, we offer advanced treatments and personalised solutions to address skin redness and rosacea, helping you regain your skin’s health and confidence.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of Facial Broken Veins

Facial broken veins are characterized by the appearance of small, visible blood vessels near the surface of the skin on the face. Common symptoms and signs of facial broken veins include:

  1. Red or Blue Lines: These veins often appear as thin, red, or blue lines or webs on the skin.
  2. Location: They are typically found on the cheeks, nose, chin, and sometimes on the forehead.
  3. Visibility: These veins are noticeable on the skin’s surface and may become more visible when you exert yourself, experience changes in temperature, or after consuming alcohol.
  4. No Pain: Facial broken veins are generally painless and do not cause discomfort.

Symptoms of Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face. It can manifest in various ways, and its symptoms may vary from person to person. Common symptoms of rosacea include:

  1. Facial Redness: Persistent redness and flushing of the central part of the face, including the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. This redness can resemble a sunburn.
  2. Visible Blood Vessels: Small blood vessels on the face, known as telangiectasia or spider veins, may become visible, leading to a web-like appearance.
  3. Pimples and Bumps: Red, pus-filled bumps (papules) and pimple-like bumps (pustules) often develop. These can be mistaken for acne.
  4. Eye Irritation: Ocular rosacea can affect the eyes, causing symptoms such as redness, dryness, itching, burning, and sensitivity to light.
  5. Thickened Skin: In some cases, especially in men, rosacea can lead to thickening of the skin on the nose, known as rhinophyma.
  6. Burning or Stinging: Some individuals with rosacea may experience sensations of burning, stinging, or tightness in the affected areas.

Causes

Facial broken veins can develop for several reasons:

Genetics: Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to developing facial broken veins.

Sun Damage: Prolonged sun exposure can weaken the walls of blood vessels and contribute to the development of spider veins on the face.

Ageing: As people age, the skin and blood vessels can become less elastic, increasing the likelihood of visible facial veins.

Rosacea: People with rosacea, a skin condition characterized by redness and flushing of the face, may be more prone to developing facial broken veins.

Injury: Trauma or injury to the face can lead to the formation of broken blood vessels.

Alcohol Consumption: Excessive alcohol consumption can dilate blood vessels and contribute to the development of facial spider veins.

While the exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, it is believed to involve genetic, environmental, and vascular factors. Triggers for rosacea may include sun exposure, certain foods, alcohol, and temperature changes.  Anyone can develop rosacea. But people who are female; have skin that burns easily in the sun; are over 30; smoking; and have a family history of rosacea are more likely to develop it.
