Sagging and ageing skin
Sagging and ageing skin is not a medical condition, it is not harmful to our health but can lower our self esteem. It is a sign of ageing, but could be caused by other factors. For most people, the skin starts to age and become saggy between the ages of 35-40 years.
Symptoms
Sagging skin can develop in different areas on your body, the most common areas where skin sagging may occur including your face, jawline, neck, abdomen, upper arms, and inner thighs. Skin on the face can sag in different ways, for example, the development of wrinkles, jowls, bags under the eyes, drooping eyelids, deeper nasolabial folds, and double chin.
Causes
The main factor that causes your skin to sag or prematurely age is the loss of collagen. Collagen is the substance that gives your skin its elasticity. Collagen and elastin provide firmness and structure for your skin, but as you age, you naturally begin to lose collagen.
Weight loss can also affect the loss of collagen, as losing fat reduces the volume of that area of your skin. The loss of both substances leads to the matrix of collagen, elastin, and fat to break down, causing the loss of elasticity, and therefore result your skin to sag.
Losing collagen is a symptom of ageing, hence aging is also the factor of having sagging skin. Examples of factors that can fasten your natural ageing process are sun exposure, smoking, environmental pollution.
Other possible reasons for sagging skin include: pregnancy, unhealthy diet, dehydration, stress, genetics, and tiredness.
