Loose Skin
Loose skin / sagging skin are also known as skin laxity, often starting from the age of 25.
Loose skin, a common concern often encountered as a consequence of weight loss, aging, or other factors, embodies a challenge that affects individuals on a physical and psychological level. This condition arises when the skin loses its former elasticity and resilience, resulting in a sagging appearance.
Skin laxity that occurs with age is mostly due to the loss of collagen networks, elastin fibres, and hyaluronic acid.
Symptoms
Firm skin can stretch and snap back into place easily. Loose skin’s main sign is when the skin loses its tightness and flexibility, making it look droopy and less firm, and sometimes creating creases or wrinkles. Areas like the face, neck, tummy, arms, thighs, and neck often show loose skin. Remember, loose skin can happen due to different reasons like losing weight quickly, getting older, being pregnant, or because of your genes.
Causes Of Loose Skin
Loose skin can be caused by various factors, including:
Weight Loss: Rapid or significant weight loss, especially when it’s achieved quickly, can lead to loose skin. The skin might not have enough time to adjust to the changes in body size.
Ageing: As we age, our skin’s production of collagen and elastin, which contribute to its elasticity, decreases. This natural decline in skin’s elasticity can result in loose skin over time.
Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the skin stretches to accommodate the growing baby. After childbirth, the skin might not fully regain its previous tightness.
Genetics: Genetic factors play a role in how our skin ages and its tendency to become loose.
Sun Exposure: Excessive sun exposure can damage the skin’s collagen fibres and elastin, which could lead to premature skin ageing and increased likelihood of loose skin.
Poor Nutrition: A diet lacking essential nutrients, especially those important for skin health like vitamins A and C, can contribute to the loss of skin elasticity.
Smoking: Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and damages collagen and elastin, contributing to premature ageing and loose skin.
Lack of Exercise: Regular physical activity helps maintain muscle mass, which provides underlying support to the skin. A lack of exercise can lead to loose skin.
